10. Four Tet - Lion (Jamie xx Remix)
I had intentions of posting this much sooner, but I’m lazy and then I got some strep-like viral thing and being awake hurt. So, he’s my fever-induced year end list. Hopefully I can get my top tracks and remixes posted tomorrow.
1. The xx - Coexist
A lot of people said this album wasn’t as good as their first and then dismissed it. Maybe it wasn’t, but either way, I love it. It translates amazingly well into a live setting. Which I saw twice and would see as many more times as they come back to Boston.
2. John Talabot - fin
John Talabot opened for The xx on the West Coast portion of the tour, but not here in Boston. This makes me sad. Thankfully, listening to this album makes me happy.
3. Jessie Ware - Devotion
She’s better than Adele, she’s better than Lana Del Rey, she’s better than (fill in the blank). She’s a soul singer, or something, but not boring.
4. Grimes - Visions
Is it possible to have a year end list and not have Grimes on it?
5. Andy Stott - Luxury Problems
So, this is dub techno, or something, I dunno. I don’t know anything about music. But, it’s dark and the songs are filled with bass and most of them build layer upon layer.
5. Crystal Castles - III
It’s not as good as I or II, but I still love them. The fact that they released this meant that I got to see them live again and there’s nothing quite like their live show. It’s a mix of electronic music and assault and it’s amazing.
6. Twin Shadow - Confess
So, I guess this is a proper indie rock album. I find myself less ‘into’ that lately, but I listened to this album a lot this year, so.
7. Polica - Give You the Ghost
A song from this album was featured on The xx’s Tumblr, two songs feature Mike Noyce of Bon Iver and they have two drummers. It’s like it was made for me to love. This is also an example of exactly how to use atuotune to do something cool/good.
8. How to Dress Well - Total Loss
So, there’s a song on here that samples Ashanti’s Foolish. Sample’s are in this year? The rest of the album is good too.
9. Bjork - Bastards
Ok, so we all know this is what Bjork does. She puts out an album, commissions a ton of remixes, releases them as singles, and then re-releases them in an album format. It’s an obvious ploy to make more money, fine. But you know what, find the worst thing Bjork put out between Biophilia and Bastards and it’s infinitely better than the ‘best’ thing Madonna put out this past year… er, you can probably make that past decade.
10. Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
This music on this album is pretty; gorgeous really. The stand out for me is the track Hood.
11. Holy Other - Held
I was really looking forward to this after last year’s With U EP. Pitchfork said this music to dance alone to, or something like that. If I felt better, I might try and write something myself, but that works.
12. Saint Etienne - Words and Music
After a 7 year hiatus, Saint Etienne have still got it. The Deluxe Edition with 12 remixes is worth checking out.
13. Hot Chip - In Our Heads
Not my favorite Hot Chip album, but there are some definite stand out tracks and it also meant I finally got to seem them live, so that’s enough to get it on the list.
14. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Trouble
I think I discovered TEED because John Talabot remixed the track Tapes & Money or maybe it was because Joe Goddard remixed one of his tracks. Either way, he won DJ Mag’s Best of British, Best Live Act and Best Album awards, so if you want some dance music, here you go.
15. Flume - Flume
This album didn’t get a lot of attention and some of the songs I don’t really love, but enough of the other tracks, Sleepless and Stay Close especially, keep bringing me back, so it deserves a spot on the list.
16. The 2 Bears - Be Strong
Kind of like the Hot Chip album, this album can be a bit hit or miss, but it’s a fun album and when they do get a hit it’s great. They also do great remixes.
16. I:Cube - “M” Megamix
Apparently this French guy had a bunch of music lying around and thinks dance albums are stupid, so he spent 5 mins on the track list and well, here it is at #16 on my list.
17. Beach House - Bloom
Beach House has a pretty distinct sound, but you know what? It works. If this album had come out later in the year, it would probably rank higher, but I kind of forgot about it, so here it is. Soz.
18. Purity Ring - Shrines
They put out two singles at the end of last year, which I really liked. The album was pretty good too.
19. Santigold - Master of My Make-Believe
I guess I prefer Santigold to M.I.A. I missed her concert, but that’s ok. I’m running out of things to write…
20. Gossip - A Joyful Noise
I listened to this a lot because I went to see them live, which was a last minute decision. They’re great live. There’s no Heavy Cross on this album, but it’s still fun.
Honorable Mention
These are albums I didn’t really give enough time to, but I’m pretty sure they’re worth spending time with. You can write your own blurb about each of them.
1. Four Tet - Pink
2. Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan
3. Grizzly Bear - Shields
4. Chairlift - Something
5. The Presets - Pacifica
